BUCKINGHAMSHIRE
MIDDLE CLAYDON.
Memorabilia of Florence Nightingale. (q.v. East Wellow and Florence Nightingale Museum) The village is 13 miles north west of Aylesbury, off the A473. Claydon House (Open daily except Mon. and Fri. 14.00-18.00, April-October.Tel: 01296 730 349 ) is the seat of the Verney family and though the house is now owned by the National Trust, members of the family still live in south wing. Most of the remaining interior is open to the public and there is a small museum devoted to Florence Nightingale, who often stayed at this country house with her sister, Lady Verney. The room in which she stayed has her portrait by W.B Richmond hanging above the fireplace. There are a number of her letters here and photographs of her, some of which were taken immediately following her return from Scutari.
